Both water your crops. Both can be automated. But drip and sprinkler irrigation work in very different ways, and the wrong choice costs you water, money and yield.

How each one works
Drip irrigation delivers water slowly, right at the base of the plant, through a network of pipes and emitters. Water goes to the roots and nowhere else.
Sprinkler irrigation sprays water over the crop from above, mimicking rainfall across the whole area.
That single difference… targeted versus broadcast… drives everything else.

Where drip wins
Drip is the most water-efficient method there is, reaching around 90% efficiency because almost nothing is lost to evaporation or runoff.
It shines on high-value crops where uniform, precise watering protects quality: soft fruit, salads, vines, and anything grown in rows, polytunnels or glasshouses. Because water stays at the roots and off the leaves, you also reduce the risk of foliar disease.
If water is scarce or expensive on your site, drip irrigation is usually the smart long-term choice.
The catch: it needs clean water and good filtration, and emitters can clog if that’s neglected. Design and upkeep matter.
Where sprinklers win
Sprinklers cover large areas quickly and cost less per acre to do it. For broadacre field crops and dense plantings where running drip line to every plant isn’t practical, sprinklers are often the sensible option.
They also do something drip can’t: frost protection. A fine spray during a cold snap can shield a crop, which is valuable for growers in exposed parts of the UK.
The trade-off is efficiency. Watering from above means more loss to wind and evaporation, so you’ll use more water for the same result.
So which should you pick?
It comes down to your crop, your water and your budget.
- Choose drip for high-value, row or protected crops, or where water efficiency is the priority.
- Choose sprinklers for large fields, dense planting, or where frost protection matters.
- Consider both. Plenty of operations run drip in the polytunnels and sprinklers in the open fields. There’s no rule that says you pick one for the whole site.
The right answer depends on details a table can’t capture: your soil, your water pressure, your terrain and how you plan to grow over the next few years.
