One glasshouse, several right answers

There is no single “best” greenhouse watering system. The right choice depends on what you grow and how it’s laid out.

Drip irrigation. Water delivered directly to the root zone, plant by plant. The most precise and water-efficient option for pot and container crops, propagation and anything on benching. See our drip irrigation systems.

Overhead sprinklers and misting. Even coverage across whole benches or floor-grown crops, and fine mist for propagation and humidity. Our overhead sprinkler systems are designed nozzle by nozzle, so the corners get the same water as the middle.

Automatic watering and controls. Timers, sensors and zone control that water your crop when it needs it… not when someone remembers. Automation pays for itself in labour alone in most commercial glasshouses, and it integrates with greenhouse climate control so watering, ventilation and temperature work together.

Most of the glasshouse irrigation systems we build combine two or three of these, zoned to match the crop.

However you water, irrigation, ventilation and heating work best as one decision rather than three — which is why we design watering alongside the climate systems from the start, so humidity and watering never fight each other.

Why growers pick a designed system over a kit

A greenhouse irrigation kit from a catalogue will move water. What it won’t do is account for your water pressure, your bench layout, your peak summer demand or what happens when you expand. That’s design work.

Every system we install starts with system design: flow rates, zoning, pipework sizing, filtration and the controls to run it. It’s the difference between a watering system that works on day one and one that still works, unchanged, in year ten.

We’ve delivered everything from single-tunnel setups to a turnkey commercial greenhouse — structure, irrigation, climate and controls in one project.

The same design process scales from a single polytunnel or propagation house up to multi-bay commercial glasshouses — only the scale changes. Where a catalogue kit gives you fixed lengths and fixed spacings with no allowance for your pressure or layout, a designed system is sized to your house, zoned to your crop and built to expand.

Built around your water, not just your plants

Commercial greenhouse watering lives or dies on supply. We look at where your water comes from — mains, borehole, rainwater or storage — and size the system so it holds pressure at peak demand. If storage or pumping is the weak link, we fix that as part of the same design rather than leaving you with a system your supply can’t feed.

That includes harvested and abstracted sources: with the right filtration and storage in the design, many of the glasshouse systems we build run wholly or partly on rainwater.

What a design visit covers

Before anything is specified, we walk the house with you and work through five things: what you grow and where it sits through the season; your water source, pressure and peak-day demand; how the space is zoned — benches, floor, propagation; how much of the watering you want automated; and what you’re planning next, because a system designed for today’s layout only is a system you’ll pay for twice.

You get a specification you can understand, not a parts list. What goes where, what it does, and why.

Installation is planned the same way — around your cropping, zone by zone where needed, so the house keeps working while the system goes in.

Water quality and filtration

The quiet killer of greenhouse watering systems is what’s in the water. Blocked drippers and scaled nozzles are almost always a filtration problem, not an equipment problem. Every system we design includes filtration matched to your source — mains, borehole, rainwater or stored — and if you feed through the line, the dosing kit to do it accurately. It’s the part of the specification nobody asks about and everybody depends on.

It’s also what keeps maintenance light: with the right filtration, upkeep amounts to filter checks, a seasonal flush of the lines and an eye on dripper output. Every system is handed over with a simple maintenance routine, and we’re on the phone if anything changes.

What's the best irrigation system for a commercial greenhouse?

It depends on the crop. Drip suits pots, containers and propagation; overhead sprinklers suit uniform floor or bench crops; misting suits propagation and humidity control. Most commercial glasshouses run a zoned combination — that’s exactly what a design visit works out.

Usually, yes. Controls, solenoid valves and sensors can often be retrofitted to sound pipework, turning a manual system into an automatic greenhouse watering system without starting again.
